August 8th-12th, 2016
Course Rules
During the first week in Principles
of Engineering, us newbies didn't
know how to make a webpage. I'll sum
up everything we did that week in
one entry right here. On the first
day, Dr. Neat and Mr. Miller split
the class into two groups. I wen't
with Mr. Miller and we talked about
the shop. On the second day, the class
switched so I was with Dr. Neat. We
talked about what we were going to do
later down the line in the class. The
third day was a change in pace, we
formed small groups to start the
spaghetti bridge project. The forth
day we resumed the spaghetti bridge
project the entirety of the period.
Lastly, on Friday, us newbies starting
learning to make a webpage. I am
writing this entry is on Monday, 3 days
after that previous friday I talked
about. Thus wraps up the entry of the
first week of school.
August 15th, 2016
On the first day of the week, Monday, we
continued to learn about scripting webpages
using html. I was one of the few that actually
got their computer working , but this was
the only day I was so lucky. The previous entry
was written today because we just learned how
to write an entry.
August 16th, 2016
On the second day of the week, Dr. Neat showed us
way to teach ourselves how to learn my ourselves.
He taught use that you can inspect element which
allows you look at the html script of any website
on the net.
August 17th, 2016
Today,We continued to work on the Speghetti Bridge
project with my group. We are almost done with our
first design. I put my website offically online. Jacob
helped me with the whole process using FileZilla.
August 18th and 19th, 2016
On this thursday and friday, we did not work on our
website. Instead we continued to work on our speghetti
bridges. On thursday we learned about the wednesday
challenge form and what to put on it. My group is very
close to being done with our first design with the
speghetti.
August 22th, 2016
These two days consisted of continuing our education
using computers. On the 22nd, we worked on our website
the first half of the class. The second half was using
a new program named Sketchup. We experimented with two
tools that increased the mobility inside the program.
Also, we exported a picture to the desktop.
August 23rd and 24th, 2016
(I have tried numerous times to make that image appear, Although all my attempts, i have failed allof them. The image migt be corrupted.)On the 23rd, Dr. Neat demonstrated how to put
an image onto our website. You can see which photos
I decided to put on this webpage. Not only that, we
also learned how to export a photo from sketchup
to Notebook ++ and eventually to my website. On the
24th, we continued our speghetti Bridges with the
group i was assigned in. We are done with the building
process and now we are waiting for it to dry.
August 25th , 2016
Spaghetti Bridge Wednesday Challenge
On the 25th, we continued our lessons on how to make
a website. Particularly, we learned how to put a link on
our sit, as seen above. The link is directed to a pdf
about wednesday challenges. More particularly it is
the pdf of my The Speghetti Bridge challenge with my
group members.
September 3rd-9th, 2016
Bridge Competition Results
Due to me being sick half the week and not haveing much
time in class to update my website, I'm doing a whole week
update here. towards the beginning of the week we were
working with sketch-up and doing The Speghetti Bridge
Challenge. We learned how to use general tools in
Sketch-Up. Wednesday was my last day in class due to
illness. On wednesday we talked about the results for the
Speghetti Bridge Challenge. As it turns out My group and
I took the win with a score of thirteen. The last two days
i could not say due to, like i said before, i was sick.
September 12th to 16th, 2016
Block Cutting Wednesday Challenge
As it turned out, i will continuing being sick this week onto
next week missing a couple days here and there. On the days that
i was present in class we did some work in sketchbook. Specifically,
we learned how to drag a square to make it a three dimentional
figure. You can see my results in the img linked above. The rest
of the week we worked on the block cutting challenge
because of Dr. Neat's absence. Each group had 3 days to
make 3 blocks in total. As it turns out, my group obtained
an exact score of two inches on one of the corners of a block.
When it was just the rookies without the veterans, i took on
the leadership role of the group. As a result i made it a
priority to make everyone participate. That meant i act as a
supervisor while all of the others actually cut the block. The last
thing we did for the week was the veterans showed us the invention challenge ideas
by demonstrating in the quad.
September 19th and 20th, 2016
On these two days, we engaged on a sketchup process by measuring
jenga blocks to the milimeter and sketching them in sketchup.
I found it to be easy but some people had some difficultys.
The results for two days of work are above.
September 21st, 2016
Marble wc form: Absent
Unfortunatly, i was absent during a wednesday challenge and
have to individual data. All i know is that it was a
challenge with a marble involved
September 22nd and 23rd, 2016
We were told that our websites are due this week. Because of that
we were given time to work on our websites. All day on Thursday we
were given time to work on our site. On Friday, We had time to work
on our site but we also talked about the Jet Propusion Labortory
(JPL) invention challenge. The picture in showing the current invention from the veterans.
September 26th-30th, 2016
On Monday, we engaged in an hour long conversation about our websites because they were graded over the weekend.
I recieved an B on my webpage due to the fact that I have been regularly updating my webpage everyweek.
I noticed many people in the class have a below average score on their website.
This boosted my motivation.
On Tuesday, we first watched a video about the recent unsuccessful SpaceX launch.
I wasnt personaly interested because SpaceX is known for failure and the people behind their engineering are all nasa/JPL employees that have been layedoff.
But there were some individuals who like SpaceX and that OK.
The second half of the class, we were given time to work on our websites.
On Wednesday, we started the Arch Bridge wednesday challenge. I was iformed not to create a wednesday challenge
form sothere is none on my site. The day involved getting into groups, Dr. Neat reviewing the rules, and finally
initial interactions with my group. Our initial idea was to use rubber or jenga blocksbut as time progressed, we
started to expand our ideas.
On Thursday, the whole class period was dedicated to the challenge presented to my group the day before Wednesday.
I already stated our initial ideas but I soon came to realize that weight is a huge issue in this particular challenge.
My next idea was to make six cubes of papes and making an arch from that. As a group we desided to go our seperate ways
and create a brige of our own and see whose bridge is the best in then end.
On Friday, the whole class period was not dedicated to the Arch Bridge Challenge but instead it is JPL veteran day.
Unfortuanatly, I didn't not have my phone at the time so no picture will be on featured this week. Their invention
is coming along nicly and the veterans seem to be confident on their project. The only thing I would add is they
haave the idea perfectly but they need to focus on the basic fundamentals and not focus on design and conseptual ideas.
October 3rd-7th, 2016
On Monday, the first twenty minutes of the class period we continued our talk on friday about the Jet Propusion Laboratory Challenge.
Although I don't have interest with the whole invention, it's always is nice of them to talk in front of the class and explain what they have been doing for the school year.
For the rest of the class period, which was roughly forty minutes, I continued to work on thr Arch Bridge challenge with the groups that were assigned.
We started to look into the Power Point today by starting to fill in the required parts of the slides.
On Tuesday, at the begining of class we watched a video about a human-like robot and how it interacts with objects.
This video didn't suprise me because I have already seen this specific video and I have seen robots similar to the one in the video in person.
For the rest of the class period, we talked went in our specific groups for The Arch Bridge Challenge.
Our group finally has a design and is feeling confident in our result
On Wednesday, we continued our Arch bridge challenge with our groups.
Nothing really happened today beccause we were given the entire day to prepare for the challenge tomorrow.
We have made progress on our design and aer hoping to score good points for at least a top 3 finish.
Our final design had half tennis balls as our base block.
Arch Bridge PowerPoint
On Thursday, the Arch Bridge Judging took place.
My group had issues using all of our half tennis balls beacuse the bridge would keep falling over.
In the last 5 minutes of class we desided to decrease the number of tennis balls that we would use.
It was disappointing in my eyes but what can you do if your design doesnt work, you change it.
In the end I was happy to finish the Challenge and have a score showing we competed.
On Friday, I was unfortunatly absent.
October 10th-14th, 2016
On Monday, we finally stopped with the arch bridge because it ended on Thursday the week before.
We jumped back on the sketch up adventure in sketchup, we created jenga blocks and learned to stack and twist them.
I knew a lot of what was being taught but it is always nice to learn a litte of what you do not know.
I learned what a component is and how to make a block of shade a component.
A person next to me didnt know how to do the assignment so I taught him how to proceed with the assignment.
On Tuesday, We saw a video at the beginning of class that lasted about 5 minutes.
We transitioned shortly after to another session with sketchup.
At first we continued with making staircases with jenga blocks.
About halfway through the class period we were taught how to round corners to make a card looking design.
I taught some student who didn't know how to
Card House WC
Card House Results
On Wednesday, we did the wednesday challenge.
I was in a group with Raul and Matty.
The challenge consisted of whoever made the tallest card house.
I didn't have much confidence in myself but apparently i was the one who made the tallest cardhouse in my group.
We came in third place but only one inch off of first.
The top three groups were extremly close.
The challeng was very fun and interative with very much competition.
On Thursday, I was pulled out from the rest of the class to do my safty assesment in the lab room of computers.
The course consisted of reviewing common sense skills and watching a video.
The assesment consisted of explaining what the meaning of the lab motto meant.
The motto is "Be Prepared, Be Aware, And Be Clean".
The motto itself consistsof simple ideas that are common sense as i said before.
This took me the entire period so i couldn't get to use any tools.
On Friday, the whole period was alotted for the JPL Veterans to explain their inventions to the class.
I got some pictures from the groups and have them above.
All of the projects were very simple and still in the process of being created.
I am exited to see how they will develope in the future and hopefully we will win the JPL Challenge.
October 17th-20th, 2016
On Monday, I was pulled from the group to work with Mr. Miller.
He taught me and Evan the fundamentals for cuting any materials and the tool that is needed for the job.
We were told to cut a 5 inch block of aluminum.
The person to cut their block to to 5 inches closest, is considered the winner of the day.
Although Evan was my partner, we only worked together to cut the blocks.
In total, There were 4 of us competing. In the end, Mr. Miller taught us valuable information that I will definetly use in the future.
On Tuesday, we continued our adventures with sketchup.
For todays lesson, we were taught how to make a unsharpened pencil.
I'll admit that I was pretty confused when I first tried it but after Dr Neat explained it a couple of times, I finally got it.
Dr. Neat also got a veteran who is really good with sketchup to show us the basic steps for the pencil.
When he showed us his pencile Sketchup, I was blown away. It must've taken him several class periods to make it.
Right Triangle Wednesday Challenge form
Right Tiangle Results
On Wednesday, We started the wednesday challenge.
This challenge was given to us as a two day challenge.
The challenge consists of making a right triangle and who makes the best right triangle wins
On Thursday, we spent the whole day continuing the challenge from the day before.
On Friday, No school.
October 24th-28th, 2016
On Monday, We talked about our website the entire time.
I didn't worry much about it because I update my website as much as I can in order to get the best grade possible.
Although we didn't see our grades today, I was confident like I said previously.
During the period, I worked on the Wednesday challenge form in order to stay on top of my website.
We also went over the results of the wednesday challenge results from the previous week.
I unfortunally came in last place but I wasn't worried because I knew that I could do better next week.
On Tuesday, we dedicated the entire period to enhancing our working on our website.
The maority of people worked on the Wednesday Challenge form from the week before.
The people that finished were instructed to begin the lego block sketch up.
I was fortunate enough to have Dr. Neat approve my website for moving on to the lego sketchup.
Candy Corn Wednesday Challenge Form
On Wednesday, I was unfortunatly absent.
On Thursday, we continues our adventures in SketchUp.
Some of the class still hadn't finished the wednesday challenge forms.
I continued my work on the lego SketchUp.
Dr. Neat introduced my to a new tool in SketchUp that allows me to round cornes in the 3rd dimention.
I had been stuck for the last two days on the matter, no i fixed my problem.
On Friday, like every friday, the JPL veterans came and talked about what they are working on.
As always, they look like they are on the road to success when it comes to progression.
I could'nt help notice that Mr. Wilton especially gave alot of advice today.
I don't know if it was because people were off track or he was in the mood.
I continued the lego SketchUp that I started last week.
October 31st and November 1st-4th, 2016.
Due to the fact that I was judge for a Wednesday challenge this week, I will sum up this whole week in one entry.
At the beginning of the week, we worked on the lego in SketchUp. I was one of the first person to finish the sketch.
Once wednesday came around, I was chosen to be a judge for a wednesday challenge.
This proved to be a lot of work because the judges were given a lot of tasks to complete in the process of wednesday.
This challenge was a two day adventure and I was completely swamped with work in the mean time.
CardBoard E Wednesday Challenge form
E Final Results
Friday is what it always is, the JPL people were given tips from Mr. Wilton.
This is one of the last times that Mr. Wilton will come to the class so he was really pushing the groups to show results because the deadline is coming up.
November 7th-11th, 2016
On Monday, we did two things.
The first thing we did which lasted the majority of the period was talk about the websites and who had te best website.
I unfortunatly was focused on be the judge of the last wednesday challenge and not focused on my website.
This resulted in a grade that I was not proud of as a result.
The second thing we did was assemble the groups that were together in the wednesday challenge and have them choose the E that they wanted to get graded.
On Tuesday, I was unfortunaly absent. Due to my voting place being in Arcadia.
Donald Trump won the Electoral vote today!!!
On Wednesday, there was a new wednesday challenge.
For this challenge we were tasked to deside the ratio by weight our two objects were to each other.
Once we desided our ratio, we were then tasked to weigh both of them on a scale to deside how much mass it has.
Then we give our final results to the judge.
On Thursday, the JPL veterans were given time to demonstrate or descride their inventions.
On Friday, Veterans day!!!! (No School)
November 14th-18th, 2016
On Monday, the judges of the E wednesday challenge announced the winner of the Wednesday challenge.
Since i was a judge I did alot of work to make sure hat everything went smoothly.
In the end, the majority of the class had time to work on the website and the judges presented the winners of the challenge from two weeks prior.
On Tuesday, I was taken from the majority along with Krish, Evan, and Raul to work on a project in the shop.
We desided as a group to make a box that opens from the top and has a drawer on the bottom.
We will do this by spliting the box into two parts in order to have a compartment that wont move on the top and a drawer on the bottm.
Sheer Wednesday Challenge Form
On Wednesday, I was Unfortuatly Absent. I was sick. D:
On Thursday, I was Unfortuatly Absent. I was sick. D:
On Friday, the JPL veterans presented their final project for the JPL invention challenge.
We only had three entries and there were 4 inventions.
There was a competition amoung the veterans in order to deside who will advance and who wouldn't.
Have A Great Thanksgiving break!!!!
